The Effect of Smoking on Neuroleptics in Inpatients with Schizophrenia


Abstract
Objective:
@EN The author's goal was to get data of the relationship between smoking status and neuroleptic doses in inpatients with schizophrenia in Korea.
@ES Method:
@EN 646 inpatients with schizophrenia who were hospitalized at 18 university hospitals and 8 mental hospitals were examined by doctors who work for those hospitals. Then doctors checked the questionnaire including demographic data, diagnosis
smoking or
not, amount of daily smoking, and doses of neuroleptics.
@ES Results:
@EN (1) 39.8% of patients (male 63.6%, female 12.3%) were smokers and reported a mean of 14.1¡¾7.9 cigarettes smoked per day.
(2) In demographic data, christian showed nonsmoking vs smoking as 2:1. In occupation the unemployed and the student revealed lower smokers than other jobs.
(3) Current smokers and nonsmokers received mean neuroleptic doses of 787.2¡¾818.0mg and 727.8¡¾670.6mg (chlorpromazine equivalent); the difference was not significant.
(4) There was no statistic significance between doses of neuroleptics and the amount of smoking, but was positive correlation (+0.0043, p=0.456).
@ES Conclusions:
@EN There was no association (1) between doses of neuroleptics and smoking and (2) between doses of neuroleptics and amount of smoking. However, there was positive correlation between doses of neuroleptics and amount of smoking.
